Project: URBAN INSTALLATION FOR THE AWARENESS AND REGENERATION OF NEGLECTED GREEN AREA
Date: 2021.03 - 2021.12
Location: Niardo, Brescia, Italy
Status: Completed

Introduction and Project Goals
The “Barrel Tap” project, commissioned by the Pro Loco of Niardo, is an important urban regeneration initiative aimed at transforming a space previously abandoned and neglected by the Municipal Administration. This artistic and functional installation represents an opportunity to create a setting that celebrates the symbols and values of the local community, filling a clear gap in the enhancement of green areas.
The Camunian Rose
At the center of the roundabout, on a grassy surface, stands the Camunian Rose, crafted in corten steel sheet and filled with river pebbles. This design element not only represents the colors and logo of the Lombardy Region but also expresses the deep connection with the history of Valle Camonica. The Camunian Rose, a historic and cultural symbol of the region, rises as a perspective towards the sky, offering a visual tribute to local roots and traditions.
The Main Installation
The centerpiece of the project is a monumental suspended barrel tap pouring onto a grape cluster made of concrete, resting on a reflecting water surface. This element symbolizes the springs, rivers, and streams that cross the town, representing the flow of life and the bond between water and the territory. The installation enriches the area aesthetically while also serving as a reminder of the fundamental natural resources sustaining the community.
The Skyline
From the eastern side, a corten steel panel reproduces the skyline of the surrounding mountains that frame the town of Niardo. This installation also serves an educational purpose, with the names and altitudes of the peaks engraved onto its surface. It both celebrates the natural beauty of the mountain landscape and provides visitors and residents with valuable information.
Flowerbeds and Symbolism
The project is complemented by three flowerbeds with low vegetation and a vine-planted area. Together with the barrel tap, they symbolize the vineyards covering the slopes of Losine, visible from Niardo. These green elements not only embellish the site but also recall the winemaking tradition of the region, blending the installation with its cultural and natural heritage.
Materials and Sustainability
The project makes use of corten steel, a material evoking the ancient forges and artisanal traditions of the valley. Corten steel was chosen for its resistance to weathering and its capacity to self-protect against corrosion through the formation of a compact passivating surface layer. This patina, composed of alloy oxides, changes over time in tone and texture, giving the structure a dynamic and enduring character that mirrors the history and evolution of the material itself.
Conclusion
The “Barrel Tap” project was born out of the need to redevelop a neglected public space, addressing a widespread lack of awareness regarding the care and value of green areas, especially in mountain communities such as those of Valle Camonica. In many of these contexts, public spaces are often abandoned or downgraded, while squares are turned into parking lots, prioritizing cars over people.
With this project, the intention was to reverse that trend, creating a landmark for the community that not only beautifies the area but also fosters reflection on the role and importance of public green spaces. The installation thus becomes a symbol of renewal and of a more people-centered urban life, respectful of both natural and cultural heritage.
