Date: 2021.12 - 2023.12
Location: Breno, Brescia, Italy
Status: Completed

Introduction and Project Goals
“Open Book” is a street library designed as an open and welcoming place, capable of capturing attention and sparking curiosity. Conceived as a community gathering point, it offers an environment where people can share moments of culture and reflection while being immersed in nature. It is an ideal place to study on warm summer days, to borrow, consult, or donate books—fostering a deeper connection between people and culture.
Historical and Cultural Context
The project is located in the Municipality of Niardo, along Via Sommavilla, in an area of high historical and cultural value that preserves the memory of the village’s old town. The structure stands within the “Oasis of Blessed Innocenzo”, a green area surrounded by houses reflecting the local rural architecture. This strategic location is at the center of a civic and cultural hub that already includes the municipal library, the Corazzieri headquarters, the Pro Loco of Niardo, the hostel, and the MuEt ethnographic museum of mountain arts and crafts. “Open Book” contributes to this system by creating an integrated civic and cultural center where history, culture, and community come together in one shared space.
Design of the Structure
The structure of “Open Book” unfolds in a semicircle, recalling the shape of an open book. Built with modular wooden elements, it provides multifunctional public spaces with surfaces for reading, studying, or placing books. At its center, a large circular bench invites socialization, while smaller individual seats allow for private reading. The infrastructure is also equipped with electrical outlets for the use of electronic devices such as computers or phones, ensuring practicality and functionality.
Harmony with the Environment
The design is conceived to integrate harmoniously with its surroundings: half of the structure is covered with a PVC canopy to provide shelter from weather, while the other half remains open, allowing natural light to illuminate the space during the day. For summer evenings, artificial spot lighting is included, creating a welcoming and safe atmosphere after dark.
Conclusion
“Open Book” is more than an outdoor library—it is a catalyst for culture and social life. By bridging historical heritage with contemporary needs, the project offers the community a unique place to grow, learn, and share.
